Monserrat neighborhood is commonly mistaken for San Telmo or Congreso.

In colonial times, Monserrat was the political, economic, social and cultural center of the city. You can experience Buenos Aires history in Montserrat just by visiting a few of the buildings, streets and underground tunnels that traverse the district. Take a stroll through Manzana de las Luces, contemplate the architecture of Iglesia de San Ignacio and visit the Cabildo – the government’s cradle in the colonial period and currently a museum, the Casa Rosada – the government house; and the Metropolitan Cathedral, where the remains of General San Martin rest. The Avenida de Mayo runs from Plaza de Mayo and is a reminiscent of Madrid’s Gran Vía with its splendid façades. Among these buildings you will find the legendary Café Tortoni. The avenue leads all the way to the National Congress where national legislators convene throughout the year.
